A man has been shot dead in Texas after a 20-minute, high-speed chase that was shown on live TV and was being watched by his mother.
The victim was identified as 41-year-old Frank "Trey" Shephard, a father of three.
His mother said she saw the chase unfold on live TV and got a call from her son shortly before he died.
"He said, 'Bye, I love you.' He just called to tell me he loved me," Cheryl Shephard told ABC.
"I told him to stop. 'Stop the car Trey. Get out the car Trey, please. Don't do this, please don't do this baby'.
"He knew he wasn't coming home."
The chase began when two officers tried to pull over the Chrysler 300 Mr Shephard was driving due to "suspicious activity", including unsafe lane changes.
But he did not stop, leading police on the chase along a Houston highway.
Mr Shephard's car eventually struck two other vehicles at an intersection before stopping.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the officers told the suspect to show his hands, but as they approached his car he reached back into his vehicle.
Suspecting that he was reaching for a weapon, both officers opened fire multiple times, killing the man. However, no gun was found in the vehicle, the Chronicle said.
According to news reports, at one point Mr Shephard called 911 saying he had a child in the car and threatening to harm the child if police did not stop chasing him. But no child was found in the vehicle.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
Mr Shephard was a barber. According to news reports, he had a long criminal record including a conviction for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
