A "perfect" 100-carat diamond, the size of a walnut, has been sold for $22.1m (£14.8m).
The jewel, which was mined by De Beers in southern Africa, was snapped up by an anonymous buyer.
"This 100.20-carat diamond is the definition of perfection," said Gary Schuler of Sotherby's in New York
"The colour is whiter than white. It is free of any internal imperfections."
He likened its transparency "to a pool of icy water".
The sale fell short of the $30.6m (£24.1m) world record price paid for a 118.28 carat white diamond in Hong Kong in 2013.
Sotheby's said only six perfect diamonds weighing more than 100 carats have been sold at auction in the last 25 years.
The diamond was the top selling item in a sale of more than 350 items in the Sotheby's "Magnificent Jewels" sale.
