This laughing teenage girl had just been spared jail by a judge after terrorising and robbing a vulnerable disabled man.
Curbi Kay, 19, was given a suspended sentence by a judge at Manchester Crown Court who was told she was feeling ‘disgusted with herself’ after taking the phone of her victim, a man in his 20s who has spina bifida.
While on bail for that robbery, she was a passenger in a car that smashed into a traffic light, travelled across the road, and slammed into an HGV, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Kay admitted robbery and being carried in the car, which had been stolen from a pensioner.
The court heard that the victim has ‘obvious physical difficulties’ which mean he cannot walk or stand for long periods and learning difficulties.
But he now takes longer routes than he has to to avoid Kay, who lives in his neighbourhood.
The court heard that on July 8 the man was walking along Greenbrow Road in Wythenshawe when Kay approached him and began abusing him and threatening to ‘floor’ him, accusing him of having insulted a relative.
Demanding he give up his phone, she lied: “I’ve been in prison before - it’s not going to bother me if I go back to prison for you is it.”
Throughout his ordeal the victim was struggling to stay on his feet, which were hurting him. Teen Kay was described as being so worked up her hands were shaking.
Questioned by police, Kay claimed someone else had robbed the victim, saying, ‘I wouldn’t hit a disabled kid’.
In a statement the victim said: “I’m panicky and nervous about Curbi Kay coming up to me. I’m getting tired by having to go longer routes in order to avoid her - I’m really intimidated by her.”
Kay’s ‘difficult adolescence’ was said to ‘have a bearing on the way she behaved’ by her lawyer. Sentencing her to 18 month sentence suspended for two years, with nine months supervision, a requirement to attend a women’s programme, 100 hours unpaid work, a curfew,
Mr Recorder Bedford described her offence as an ‘appalling piece of behaviour towards a vulnerable young man’. “You knew about his disability and you exploited his disability - its clear that he still lives in fear of you”, he added.
She was ordered to pay £100 in compensation and a restraining order bars her from going within ten metres of the victim for three years.
